How to Know If You Love Someone or Just the Idea of Them

The difference is not about intensity of feeling. It is about whether the connection you are devoted to actually exists between two people -- or only inside your head.

You have probably been here. There is a person you cannot stop thinking about. They occupy your mental real estate like a tenant who does not pay rent but somehow keeps renovating. You replay conversations. You imagine futures. You feel something so big and so consuming that it has to be love -- because what else hits this hard?

But there is a version of this experience that has almost nothing to do with the other person. And if you have ever been brutally honest with yourself at 2 a.m., you might already suspect which version you are living in.

Relational Code Theory draws a sharp line between these two experiences. Not because one is real and the other is fake -- both feel equally real from the inside. But because they have fundamentally different structures. And the structure tells you everything.

The Signature vs. The Projection

In RCT, every bond between two people produces a Relational Signature -- a unique configuration of which Resonance Fields are activated and at what depth. There are twelve fields: Emotional, Intellectual, Physical, Spiritual, Practical, Social, Aesthetic, Sovereignty, Play, Adventure, Co-regulation, and Psychic. When you genuinely love someone, the Signature is built from actual interaction. Real conversations. Real experiences. Real moments where specific fields came alive because of what happened between you -- not because of what you imagined happening.

A projected Signature is different. It is a Signature you have constructed inside your own head -- fields you believe are active based on who you want this person to be rather than who they have actually shown themselves to be in relation to you. You imagine the Intellectual resonance you would have if you could just have that one deep conversation. You assume the Emotional depth is there because of how intensely you feel -- without noticing that the intensity is entirely one-directional. You project luminous fields onto a bond that, in actual practice, might be largely dormant.

The feeling is real. The Signature is not.

What is actually happening between us, beyond the names we give it?

The (500) Days of Summer Problem

Tom Hansen in (500) Days of Summer is the patron saint of loving the idea of someone. He meets Summer and immediately begins constructing a Signature that has very little to do with who she actually is. In his mind, their Intellectual and Aesthetic fields are off the charts -- she likes The Smiths, she is interesting, she gets it. Their Emotional field is luminous. Their future is certain.

But look at what actually happens between them. Summer tells him directly and repeatedly who she is and what she wants. The real Signature -- the one built from actual interaction -- looks nothing like the one in his head. The Emotional field is not reciprocal. The Sovereignty field is a disaster because he cannot let her be who she is without it threatening his entire narrative. What he calls love is a detailed projection mapped onto a person who never agreed to be the screen.

The movie is brilliant because it shows you both Signatures -- the one Tom invented and the one that actually existed. The expectations-versus-reality scene is not just a stylistic choice. It is two Relational Signatures placed side by side. And the gap between them is the entire source of his suffering.

How to Tell the Difference

Here is a practical test. Think about the person you believe you love and ask yourself: which Resonance Fields are active based on things that have actually happened between us?

Not things you imagine happening. Not potential. Not if we just had more time or if they would just open up. What has actually occurred in the real, observable space between you and this person?

If you are honest, you might find that the Signature you have been carrying around is mostly speculative. You have assigned depth to fields that have never actually been tested. You have assumed Emotional resonance based on your feelings about them rather than on mutual emotional exchange. You have given them credit for Intellectual depth based on a few good texts rather than on sustained, reciprocal engagement.

Real love produces a Signature you can trace back to specific interactions. I know our Emotional field is deep because of what happened when I fell apart and they stayed. I know our Intellectual field is alive because we have spent hours in conversation and both walked away changed. I know our Co-regulation field is real because my nervous system actually settles in their presence -- not because I fantasize about it settling.

Projected love produces a Signature you can only trace back to your own imagination. And that is not love. That is authorship.

The Inventory That Changes Everything

This is not about shaming yourself for having projections. Everyone projects. It is how the human brain works -- we fill in gaps, we construct narratives, we anticipate resonance based on limited data. The problem is not that you do this. The problem is when you mistake the projection for the bond and then make life decisions based on a Signature that only exists in your head.

So do the inventory. Take each of the twelve fields and ask: is this active because of something real between us, or because of something I have decided should be there? Rate the depth -- not based on how you feel, but based on what has actually happened. If a field is at 80 in your imagination but 15 in reality, that gap is the projection.

This is uncomfortable work. It might mean realizing that the person you have been agonizing over for months is someone you barely know in actual relational terms. It might mean seeing that the bond you thought was everything is actually alive in two fields at moderate depth -- real, but not the all-consuming thing you built in your head.

But it also might mean the opposite. You might discover that the Signature is actually there -- tested, reciprocal, grounded in real resonance. And that is worth knowing too. Because the difference between loving someone and loving the idea of them is not about how much you feel. It is about whether what you feel has a foundation in what actually lives between you.

By releasing the pressure to categorise and escalate, the connection was allowed to evolve on its own terms.
